One of the cool things about YTT was that you could hear a new take on the hits of the time with classic songs thrown in and, in some cases, the ones done by the Young Talent Team or individuals are better than the hit versions.
Some songs had lyrics altered because of obvious reasons, you can’t have a kid singing ‘I lit a cigarette’ and ‘I killed the dinosaur’ lines in ‘Walk the Dinosaur’.
Here is the opportunity to play the songs one after the other and see which one you love the most, perhaps you love them both.
Some may point out that there are lots more songs to compare but we’re just using a couple of examples.
Crazy For You
Crazy For You was released by Madonna in 1985 and was for the movie Vision Quest, you can see scenes from that movie in the music video, the song was a big success hitting No. 1 in America and in Australia and done well in many other countries.
The YTT version was recorded by Karen Dunkerton and is a highly regarded performance.
All My Loving
The Beatles classic was covered by Johnny Young recording and was turned into the Young Talent Time closing song for the 1971-88 (and 1990) run, fans have a wide choice of song versions to choose from either from surviving episodes or the albums that had a few versions over the years.
So Macho
Sinitta released ‘So Macho’ in July 1985, Sinitta was Simon Cowell’s first signing and ‘So Macho’ hit No. 2 in the UK and No. 14 in Australia in 1986 thanks to a re-release that saved the song from being a non-charting recording.
Naturally the song got a bit of a revamp to be suitable for young performers and TV rules.
Somebody to Love
‘Somebody to Love’ is one of Queen’s big hits, it was also tackled by Lyndall, reaction to the performance was mixed, probably as it was a performance early in the YTT 2012 run and they were finding out the team’s abilities.
Price Tag
Jesse J’s 2011 recording of Price Tag was a No. 1 hit in the UK and peaked at No. 2 in Australia; the Young Talent Team gave the song a shot in the first episode of the show.
Walk the Dinosaur
Walk the Dinosaur was a Top 10 hit in Australia, the UK and America, the song was about Nuclear Armageddon which may surprise some people especially as the video doesn’t imply that.
Naturally the song got revamped slightly so it was suitable for the Young Talent Team and for those who kept television shows fairly clean.
